South Africa 4x4 - Rental of Land Rover 110 Defenders & Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4x4s. Equipped, insured, unlimitted kilomtres. Anywhere in Africa!

Erwan le Doze

Erwan le Doze

Erwan le Doze rented a Land Rover Defender from us in 2015 ( old cows being dragged around her…lol ). The Defender became unavailable due to an accident it was involved with a couple of days before his rental was about to start ( see comment at the bottom about accidents ). According to our rental contracts ( will be great if clients read it and guide themselves accordingly and not by emotional outbursts ) at this stage I can step out of the contract and have no further dealings with the client. I am also human and realised that the client would be better off with my assistance than being left to his own devises. Usually being kind and trying to do the right thing and being legally correct does not match.

Facts :

  1. I provided the le Doze family with accommodation in Johannesburg. Free of charge.
  2. I offered Erwan le Doze an alternative equipped 4×4 ( Land Cruiser ). This vehicle was available immediately. The Land Cruiser also costs me considerable more than what Erwan would have paid me for the rental of the Land Rover. But I was willing to make this arrangement in order to get their adventure on the road. Erwan le Doze DECLINED this offer and went ahead to make his own arrangements.
  3. There was no reason for Erwan to miss out on his adventure.
  4. The refund of the deposit was never an issue and was offered from the beginning. Erwan le Doze kept changing the amount he was claiming from me as then he only wanted to have the deposit, then he wanted me to pay for his trip, then additional fees for inconvenience caused. Anyone involved with a refund or payment surely get the final details ready first and then make the payment. Before Erwan could decide what he wanted he went on http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum and made a posting about his bad experience and how I did not want to refund him. Not true !
  5. I must say that I found the comments made by other members of the 4×4 community rather strange. Not one of them contacted me to find out what the facts were. All had immediate offers of sympathy on the original posting and a few even tried to add on their own little story (see previous post about Self Drive Africa Rentals). None of the astute 4×4 members actually offered any assistance to solve the matter. Net soos ‘n klomp kwetter voëls in ‘n boom.

PS – Thanks to Hannes Grobler who is a legal practitioner who became aware of this matter and then assisted in drafting an agreement to solve this matter. Effort and work is appreciated !

Self Drive Africa Rentals

Today I address a matter with Self Drive Africa Rental.

My mission continues to put out the correct facts. I have found over the past 2 years that some clients and companies I work with only refers to the side of the agreement that benefits them and then they get very offended and makes all sorts of threats, if I try and enforce my side of the agreement. I am slowly addressing each and every negative comment posted about South Africa 4×4 Rentals on the internet. Where I messed up I will gladly admit it and sort it out with the individual. But random untruths posted on the Internet stops now !

Self Drive Africa Rentals

For this post I refer to a Toyota Hilux 4×4 I have rented in from Self Drive Africa Rentals in Johannesburg. I rented this vehicle for a client of mine as we had another client of mine that had an accident with my 4×4. Point is, I did the right thing in assisting my client and made arrangements for a replacement vehicle for him.

The vehicle had a major breakdown in Harare in Zimbabwe ( the complete front end of the bumper and all the lights fell off due to metal fatigue ) and it could not be driven back to South Africa. I had to return to Zimbabwe a month later to fetch the 4×4. These costs I deducted from the rental payment that was to be made to Self Drive Africa Rental. I had a meeting with the owners Laura Gale and Dave Gale and these costs which I carried were discussed and an agreement was made. To my surprise Dave Gale goes forward and makes a negative posting on http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/ about how we do not want to pay him or Self Drive Africa Rentals. Dave, what part of the meeting did you fall a sleep ?

The Facts

Dave and Laura, lets look at the facts.

  1. We met before hand and discussed that these costs would not be paid.
  2. From Self Drive Africa Rental there was no assistance offered to cover the costs or recover the vehicle. My own funds and initiative sorted the matter to return the vehicle back to you in Johannesburg.
  3. You were paid in full for the rentals.
  4. If you really had a valid claim you would have taken some sort of legal route. You did not have a claim and you thought best just to get a stab at me because you felt like it. Sad ! If you want to sort this out. Pick up the phone and sort it out. Do not be backwards and go and post rubbish on the internet.

Unfortunately I will not be bullied into paying people what is not due to them.

Land Rover 4 x 4 Roll Over – Edwin van Wijngaarden

Roll Over of Land Rover – Edwin van Wijngaarden

I do find it amazing how clients can rent a 4×4 vehicle, have a good holiday, then proceed to write off the vehicle and on their return home ( Amsterdam, Netherlands ) run to their bank and reverse all payments made. The reason why Edwin van Wijngaarden and  Joke Poen features on this blog is that they have not paid for their rental. Did not pay the insurance excess after the roll over in the Mgadigadi Pans. PS – Big thank to the guys in the Jeep that assisted and towed them to Nata Lodge. Did not co-operate in the insurance claim and by not handing in the required documents which resulted in South Africa 4×4 absorbing a cost of R 415 000 to tow in and replace the Land Rover 110 Defender.

Thank you Edwin van Wijngaarden and Joke Poen ( what an appropriate name ). I have opened a case with the South Africa Police Services for Fraud, Theft and Damage to Property. SAPS is in the process of handing this matter to Interpol who will take up the matter in Amsterdam.

I am sorry. Unacceptable !!

Unacceptable Rental Clients South Africa 4 x 4 Rental

South Africa 4×4 Rental has assisted over 2000 clients over the past 4 years with 4×4 rentals all over Africa. Up to date I have kept quiet about clients that abuses our vehicles. Damages our 4×4 vehicles ( I am not talking about a fender bender and a crack in the windscreen ) I am talking about major damages and then pretends that nothing is wrong or even worse make false claims for refunds. The best is how they try and black mail me into paying by threatening to go and write bad reviews on social media or Trip Advisor. Our contracts are clear on what we will do and we will not. It is very simple. We adjust our product at South Africa 4×4 rental to keep up and mostly ahead of the market on a yearly basis and we will continue to do so.

Going Forward

Up till today. NO MORE.

I am going to make full posts with photos where available from today about these clients. It so sad that it is always 2% of your clients that spoils the fun everyone is having. I am going to focus to keep the 98% happy, keep myself sane and happy. Need to take out the 2% that is negative, devoid of truth and in my opinion has no place on a 4×4 adventure and surely I do not want back as a client. I feel pitty when they come back in the future and will rent with another 4×4 company.
